Stylish satchels: the key handbag trend for spring summer 2011
Author: Paul BuchananThe best thing about handbags is that they don't discriminate: whether you're slim, large, tall or short, handbags are always one size fits all. This seemingly obvious statement explains why many women take so much joy in buying new handbags - because they will always fit, no matter if your body shape changes. However, this timeless quality is as much of a curse as a blessing. After all, a sequined clutch bag with a chain strap might be the epitome of style in winter, but by next summer it could well be banished to the back of your wardrobe as trends change.
Buying handbags, then, is a careful process: just how do you strike the right balance between buying a bag that is currently fashionable but won't look outdated in a year's time? Thankfully, the major fashion trend for bags in spring summer 2011 comes from a classic style: the satchel. Traditionally, the satchel has always had a preppy feel, conjuring up images of 1950s schoolboys, Indiana Jones and, more recently, computer geeks on their way to work. However, next season sees these book bags undergo a completely feminine transformation.
This is best seen in Marc Jacobs' new collection, in which minimalist retro-inspired handbags and clutches take their inspiration from the conventional satchel. Square shaped shoulder bags with long and adjustable handles dominate in hues of brown, ochre and burgundy in a clear throwback to the style of the classic satchel. This is also reflected in the spring summer 2011 handbag collection from Chloe, currently one of the most acclaimed design labels after its success at New York Fashion Week in September 2010. Leather and soft shades characterise Chloe's new bags, though top zippers replace the overhanging buckles and clasps of the regular satchel and wristlet straps also add an extra trendy feel.
On the high street, satchel-inspired handbags feature several more straps and buckles than their designer counterparts, though brown shades and burgundy persist. But wherever you're going to buy your new handbag next season, remember that flexibility is key. A burgundy satchel on a long shoulder strap may look great with a casual office outfit. But a smaller satchel-inspired handbag with an animal print finish (snake and zebra print are on trend) and a detachable strap is more easily adaptable between day and night-time engagements. What's more, opting for black or darker brown shades may give your new handbag more longevity, allowing it to remain a key fashion item in your closet for years to come.
